let’s get candid.

Okay, this one is about photography – specifically the lifestyle and family stuff. I think it is so important that people know what they are signing up for when the book a shoot with me – and because I talk so much about creating mostly candid rather than posed images, I want to explain what I mean by that.

Although I will attempt to get a full family ‘cheese’ photo for your gallery, that will not be bulk of your images. Instead, your gallery will be filled with images that show emotion, movement, maybe a little blur, maybe a little drag – whatever looks best in the specific scene, with the light we are given, and for the people I am working with. There will be some photos where everyone is looking directly at the camera, and hopefully a lot more where they are not.

The “cheese-less” photos are what I am considering to be more candid. And I could get these shots by following you around for hours and crossing my fingers that all the great stuff (hugging, laughing, moving) happens organically. Or, for quicker shoots I could use prompts to make them happen more efficiently! So, that is what I do.

This means I typically will give you very specific directions on where to stand and what to do – and while sometimes that does the trick, more typically it ends up eliciting some really great and real stuff. We get moving and chatting and something that is actually funny happens, and there is laughter. Or your kid is told to run and jump into your arms and the product of that is true excitement and happiness, which is then captured.

So it’s kind of candid, kind of forced, but mostly true – if that makes sense.

And if you are still wondering if this method and it’s result will be best for you, here is a little test…

I am the photographer for you if you say ‘yes’ to the following questions:

My kid’s genuine smile in an image is more important to me than a some of my hair being out of place.

I am okay being silly and having fun at my photoshoot.

I love both color and black and white images.

I am okay with my kid acting age appropriate at my shoot even if it’s a little chaotic or imperfect.

I want my final gallery to reflect the real personalities of the people captured.

And there it is! It’s that easy. You just show up as you are and we make some magic with that. And your gallery will be a reflection of what I see through my lens, edited a way that feels consistent to my brand.

So let’s do it. It’s not scary. And you might even have a little fun!
