Holiday Card Photos are Best at the Beach

Holiday cards have a reputation: perfectly coordinated outfits, polished smiles, and just a hint of stress behind the scenes. You can almost tell someone was bribed, someone is overheating in a sweater, and someone else is a little cold.

And I love them. I love the fields and the trees – but the truth is, I think the best holiday card photos are taken at the beach. So this summer, I urge more of you to go that route.

Because beach sessions offer a relaxed, natural alternative to traditional setups. There’s no pressure to force everyone into stiff outfits that don’t feel like them. Instead, you get comfortable, neutral layers that photograph beautifully and actually reflect your style.

The beach also turns everyday chaos into something magical. Windblown hair looks soft and effortless. Kids running around feels candid instead of chaotic. Even the imperfect moments end up looking intentional, which is exactly what makes natural family photography feel so special.

And then there’s the lighting. Beach light—especially during golden hour—is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering. To me, it is very simply and obviously the best.

Oh, and you will be glowy! Summer brings a little tan and some fresh faces – while fall and winter can feel a little pale and snotty. And another bonus? Your card will stand out. When your Christmas card photos arrive alongside a stack of plaid outfits and fireplace poses, a beach session feels fresh, modern, and personal. And it reminds people of sunny warmer days – something we are all looking forward to come holiday season.

Of course, it won’t be perfect. It might be a little cold. The wind will show up. Someone will probably complain. But that’s where the magic happens.

Because the best holiday family photos aren’t the ones where everything goes perfectly. They’re the ones that feel real—full of movement, personality, and connection. And there’s no better place to capture that than the beach.
